Before the recent increase in reported cases EV-D68 has not been of specific interest to public health. Therefore, the current range of disinfectants has not been directly tested on this strain. However public health authorities have made the following recommendations:
Center for Disease Control (CDC) and National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID):
“As EV-D68 is a non-enveloped virus, environmental disinfection of surfaces in healthcare settings should be performed using a hospital-grade disinfectant with an EPA label claim for any of several non-enveloped viruses (e.g. Hepatitis A, Adenovirous).”
Public Health Ontario:
Environmental disinfection of surfaces in healthcare settings should be performed using a hospital-grade disinfectant with a label claim of effectiveness against non-enveloped viruses.
